Up Early, Yet Again

About 2:00 AM. I woke up to prepare some fruit for J for her snack/lunch at Target. Peaches, strawberries, pineapple are sliced in a container with plenty of pineapple juice to make it real sweet. She asked me to pack her an extra. Sorrento Balanced Break© and Clif Bar© in case she has to stay later than her scheduled time.

I have an idea for chicken cooked in coconut milk served with those orange-y lentils and quinoa. I’m just thinking of a recipe idea, maybe use the slow cooker. At least I will roast the chicken breast, fix a rice curry with raisins, nuts and apple. That would be easier.

I watched the Australian and Sri Lankan Women play an ODI limited overs (50) game last night. I can’t really tell how good the Aussie Women Batswomen are, or if the Sri Lankan bowlers just are not that good. Didn’t many balls where they were asking for lbw’s. Help me out cricket fans!

I will drink some decaf and watch trains for a while.

Test Results For Test Results

In my last post, I posited I could go sleep for three hours, wake up and I will have missed very little from Australia’s innings. My conclusion is “mixed”. The Green Tops scored over 100 runs. The English took only 1 wicket. The big story was Steve Smith going out “injured” after being hit by Jafra Archer’s bouncer. Smith was decked by it; he was removed for a medical evaluation, and returned after Peter Siddle was out. Smith left at 80, made 12 more before being out lbw.

I watched Australia make a good run at the English. The loss of Smith was clearly significant. Had Smith remained, the result would have been different in all. Likelihood, given tbat Steve Smith has been the dominant batsman in the series. Comparisons to have been made to Sir Donald Bradman, the greatest ever of the batsmen.

I am amazed at my ability to blather on about cricket after only about ten week immersion into the game.

I have things to do today. I need to get some meds at the pharmacy, and do some cookie shopping for J, also shop dinner for tonight or tomorrow.

Cricket Novice Has Questions

This morning I am watching the Ashes Test Series from Edgbaston, Birmingham. As I watch Australia is at bat. They have 129/8 with 46 overs having been bowled.

My introduction to cricket came via the World Cup One Day International. The scoring seemed to be higher in the limited overs format. After 46 overs, I recall that the runs would be well in excess of 130 runs.

So the questions: How does a Test match differ from limited overs competition? Do the bowlers bowl differently that would account for a lower run rate?

Help a befuddled Yank out.

Cricket And Corpus Christi

#Corpus Christi fCricket

It’s 12:20 in the place for which we are named, Richmond-on- the-Thames. Richmond is named this place because a view of the James River reminded William Byrd II of the town in England. One day I shall show you the views so you can compare and judge yourself.

My telly is tuned into the Pakistan vs. South Africa match at the ICC World Cup. The venue is the Lord’s Cricket Ground, a venerable site, judging by some of the Victorian architecture. This match is grinding on. I feel as if Pakistan’s inning is about releasing pent-up frustration over a less than stellar outing so far.

This venerable game has continued, relatively unchanged since the Eighteenth Century, shortly after William Byrd compared my town to the other Richmond. We Virginians are conscious, perhaps obsessed with traditions and we have the statues to prove it.

This Sunday is about another tradition that won’t mean much, unless you are Catholic. Even if you are Catholic, it might not mean much, given the state of the Church today. It is the Sunday to which the Solemnity of Corpus Christi has been transferred. In many parishes, after the 1100 AM Mass, there will be a Eucharistic Procession. The priest will carry the consecrated Host in the monstrance. The worshippers will follow. Adore Te Devote by St Thomas Aquinas will be chanted. That this chant and these processions have continued for nearly eight hundred years inspire awe within me. It is about the True Presence of Christ’s Body in the sanctified bread. Metaphysically present. It isn’t just symbolism. Call us crazy. That’s OK. It isn’t about what outside observers think of Catholics.

In this era where many in the clergy have betrayed and dishonored their vows, The Lord is still with us. What comes after decadence and betrayal is purging and catharsis. While some have abandoned Him, He has not abandoned us.

Continuity.

No Longer Disinterested In Sport

There I was congratulating myself about losing interest in sports. Ice Hockey? Really?. Basketball? Meh? Baseball? I suppose. Women’s Softball? I can detect a pulse Doctor. Cricket? Where have you been all my life?!

I just finished watching New Zealand claw out a win from South Africa. They pulled it out at the very end on a “6” from Kane Williamson, their captain, on the last over.

Believe it or not, it’s not that difficult a game to follow. There is a lot of insider language and jargon in the game that is best ignored until you become familiar with the game. I’m growing into the idioms of the sport.

And tomorrow? Australia vs Bangladesh. You’ll find me at home, sitting in my comfy chair, eyes fixed on the 📺 telly.
