Human Do-ing

#Ontology

We are human beings, all of us. That we exist as humans makes us human beings. That’s is how we “be”, ontologically speaking, just as Choco, my dear departed beagle, was a canine being. He existed as a dog. If you’re into the whole transmigration of souls thing, I suspect he had the highest form of earthly consciousness possible. Dogs keep quiet about how evolved they are, lest humans explode from jealousy.

I measured my day by what I did. I went to Mass, cooked dinner, took a nap, introduced a friend to some women in recovery at an afternoon AA meeting, and cleaned up after dinner. Now I am blogging. Funny how I often think I should be doing more, as if God looks at your time card.

What mattered, today, is what I did, today. The highlight was smiling at the toddler who sat on the same pew near me with her mother at Mass. It was a simple affirmation of the gift that being alive is.

I am up again. Been up a since 2:00 AM. I have this irrational fear that I may be missing something, but what that may be I don’t know.

So I am watching travel videos, shot in the 1930’s, on YouTube. Good old YouTube.

I feel sleep wanting to creep back in. And tears of a great sadness I can’t begin to describe.

I mourn those who have passed, my mother, father, brother, ex-wife, for starters.

I grieve the evil possessing Holy Mother Church.

I fear the modern world has fallen and worshipped the transitory and worldly instead of the eternal and Divine.

I must do what I can to set things a right.

And I fear failure. What I should fear is not trying, of shrinking from the challenge, of running away..

God, help me.

Black Friday/Thanksgiving

#Gratitude

Why?

It’s about our money that we give to Wal Mart, Amazon, Target, Macy’s, the others. They, in turn, bought stuff, from the Chinese, among others. They spent vast fortunes to acquire these things. They recoup their outlay and a little something extra for their trouble, costs and profit. Thus the great cycle of commerce completes itself.

By now, the disassociation with the Christian Holy Day of the Solemnity of The Nativity is almost complete. The Santa Claus Myth prevails. It is childish, naive, uncomplicated, readily dispensible once the child reaches seven or eight, and readily grasped again once these children grow up to become parents or aunts or uncles themselves. Another cycle completes itself.

What is stifled by Black Friday is that modest holiday of gratitude, Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving isn’t particularly Christian; gratitude for God’s blessings is present in the Christian world view, but that “attitude of gratitude” is part of many other spiritual traditions. Just the idea of being quiet and humble and grateful requires not a grand display of agricultural abundance but a grateful heart. We need to be quietly thankful for that sophisticated society that connects us all and gets food to our tables. Acknowledging our interconnectedness forces us to drop our pretences of selfishness, self-sufficiency and independence. We get by in this world because we work with people we don’t particularly care for.

Humility, Quiet, Gratitude.
