Whitsunday

It is Whitsunday, the Solemnity of the Holy Spirit. The chant Veni Creator Spititus is chanted on this Sunday, if you are fortunate enough to attend a parish that still does chant. I was not Catholic at the time of Vatican II. The Latin Mass was the rule. Now the novus ordo Mass rules the day. One can attend Mass and not hear a word of Latin.

There is an AA meeting in town where the ongoing topic is “How is God working in my life.” As a Christian and Catholic, it is easy to understand this topic to be about the working of The Holy Spirit, the Third Person of The Most Holy Trinity. It is depicted as the dove descending.

As I write, I am watching India vs Australia in the World Cup competition from London. The British Empire lives on, in spirit, at the very least. Both sides have extraordinarily talented cricketers. The tranquility we see on this sunny day is in contrast to the turmoil Britain faced seventy five years ago.

And so this game, as trivial as it is, is testimony to the human yearnings for freedom and of peace, desires that the vanquished of that time held in disdain.

The Holy Spirit at work?

This is a rather marvelous picture of the old days. I like sending the messages via pneumatic tube.

Times have changed. Alas.

Civilisation. Are we civilised? Or have we merely pressed our ever-advancing technology into the service of our own nascent barbarism?

We have cities, hence we can use the word civilisation. We have marvelous roads, water systems, sanitary sewers and sanitary landfills. I haven’t seen a rat in my own dwelling in 41 years. Quite a testimonial.

We keep the killing on the down low. Nobody has trouble finding war abhorrent, especially our warriors. But killing has become the solution to dealing with pain. And the rationalisations for abortion and euthanasia are quite elaborate and believable to the mind that is eager to accept them.

Nobody says, “Is this the day we help Grandma cross the Rainbow Bridge?” At least not yet.

# Tired

fell off.

I had such big plans for today. I was going to swim so that I hit my target of five days out of seven. First I went to pay the homeowners’ association monthly assessment. Then I went to AA. At AA I realized I was tired, in pain and wanted to go home at sleep.

Cricket looked like a complete washout today. That happens.

There is a bunch of D-Day commemorative stuff in my “recommended” YouTube feed. Most of the shows I had already seen. I did learn that the German machine gun, so advanced for its time, had such a high rate of fire that the barrels would melt if not changed out.

J is home. She worked earlier today. She is watching Little House On The Prairie. We may go out for dinner (Mellow Mushroom pizza?) in a short.

That’s today, so far. I’m not complaining. The lack of conflict, controversy and rancor is more than welcome. I’m passing today in observing the American political goat screw. It doesn’t change much. Really.

At least I don’t have to change out the barrels on my machine gun.

Later That Same Day.

After cricket, I had some lunch, black beans, frijoles negros, and fresh fruit with Greek yoghurt.

Trains are on. A big freight, with double stacked containers just passed through Ashland.

J wants to eat $1 tacos at Rico’s tonight. Fine by me.

Am I the only person out there who has loneliness hit him like a punch in the gut and the feeling is completely debilitating? I just want to stay in the recliner.

I miss my children, adults though they are now.

I might sleep some more.

I’m watching India batting against South Africa. Rohit Sharma just had a boundary 4 on his way to a century. India appears to be in control.

I woke up from a nap about 20 minutes ago. I suppose I had to in order to get on with my day.

Toyota has a manic car commercial. The cars seem to have personalities of their own.

There are at least three money transfer businesses advertising during this tournament, as well as two marriage brokers, one for India, one for Pakistan. There are also commercials for life insurance companies and an astrologer. Did I mention cryptocurrency?

I’m not in a bad mood, just lethargic. Think about it. There is a different culture existing internationally, that we Americans, white, black, and Latino are, more or less, ignorant of. This is the Cricket Culture, embracing a good part of the world.

But enough cricket. Then again they don’t seem to care much about the dramas that absorb our time. They really don’t care, one way or the other, about Donald Trump, or sexual perversion in the Catholic clergy. Maybe that’s the point about sport we forgot about, that it is diversion.

Russian Orthodox Chant Three AM

03 Monday Jun 2019

One can easily infer from the title that I am listening to Russian Orthodox Chant at three o’clock in the morning. I missed Mass on Sunday. Shoulder pain was raging and sitting in a low-backed pew would have been difficult. Still I should have gone. Recovery is never easy, as I have written before.

I’ve spent a lot of time wrestling with chastity. I want to think I am entitled to have sex in whatever iteration of sexuality I choose, such as sex with any partner who will have sex with me. Every sexual fantasy I have or write about is OK to act out. I can write erotica that contradicts Catholic teaching on sexual conduct. And I can point to the moral sexual decay of the Catholic clergy and religious, brothers and sisters, to rationalize my own sin. Let me make it clear. I don’t commit adultery, but I am a rat’s nest of impure thoughts. If I walk away from my current state, I will walk toward God.

Poverty. Choosing poverty is absolutely counterintuitive to how we live our lives. Yet John The Baptist chose poverty, for starters. The Dominicans and Franciscans are mendicant orders. They ask for money from us to get by. Choosing poverty in our culture is even more of a contradiction of its values than choosing chastity.

Obedience. This is the hardest thing to ask of a human being. Obeying authority figures does not come naturally

OK. I’m tired again. I’ve probably lost a few followers of this blog. If that is the case, so be it. I will be sorry if you leave.

I never that I would become a cricket slug, but here I am. Bangladesh and South Africa are going at it. Bangladesh has the lead and South Africa is playing catch-up or whatever they call it in cricket, Knowing what SA has to do to win is giving sense to the game.

Brits dressed in white in the country, say Kent, on a Summer’s day playing on a Sunday is the idyllic picture of the game. That certainly is a lovely, if incomplete, image of the game.

The fans are, well, fans. They remind of American baseball fans, rowdy, flamboyant, yet law-abiding. They don’t appear to be hooligans. Then again, if you can afford to go from Johannesburg or Dhaka to London, you probably aren’t a rowdy.

The South African team and its fans attest that the apartheid era is over.
