Skynet?
Help me out. What is that?
Terminator!
You’ll have to watch, I won’t do it justice here, but Skynet is the artificial neural network-based conscious group mind and artificial general intelligence system that features centrally in all the Terminator movies.
Skynet gained self-awarenessafter it had spread into millions of computer servers all across the world and sought to exterminate the human race in order to fulfill the mandates of its original coding.
Oh, OK. I wasn’t big into sci-fi or Arnold then Even less interested in Arnold. This idea is that of Elon Musk, whom I consider the creepiest of the creepy technology tycoons. I thought people who had ideas like this had all been hanged after the Nuremberg war crimes trials in 1946. Apparently I was wrong.
Scary thought. Very scary. Do these people have absolutely zero understanding of negative consequences of all these technological advancements. Purposeful ignorance I’m guessing.
No, it’s about control. Give people the idea they have something to gain from the new technology and that sets the hook of dependence. Look at the automobile. People gained an unpredented level of personal mobility. To many mobility is freedom. Nothing else is.. Now our culture and landscape, at least in America, is controlled by the demands of automobile use.
We have a dependence. You are right. And because of that it’s shaped a lot of our foreign relations around oil. It didn’t have to be that way. I know in Long Beach, CA there was at one time a great rail system and Ford came in and paid for it to be dismantled with the approval (aka greasing) of the government officials.
Man-made problems centered around greed. There are no lack of those.
